Overview
Clean the Zebra GK420t printhead after every roll of media (direct thermal) or every ribbon change (thermal transfer), and the rest of the printer as needed. A dirty printhead is the most common cause of faded, streaked or blank labels, and the cleaning takes about 5 minutes.
This article covers the printhead, platen roller, media sensors, tear-off/peel bar and exterior. It applies to the GK420t in direct thermal or thermal transfer mode.
Supplies and safety
Gather these before you start. Zebra sells a preventive maintenance kit with the same items, but the pieces below work just as well.
- Isopropyl alcohol, 90% or higher, with lint-free swabs or a Zebra printhead cleaning pen
- Lint-free cloths or wipes
- A soft brush or can of compressed air
- A mild cleaner (diluted dish soap or an alcohol wipe) for the exterior
Safety notes:
- Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord before opening it.
- The printhead gets hot during printing. Let it cool for at least 2 minutes first.
- Remove rings and bracelets, and touch bare metal to discharge static before handling the printhead.
- Never use a knife, screwdriver or any metal tool on the printhead or platen roller. Scratches are permanent.
- Do not spray liquid into the printer. Always apply alcohol to a swab or cloth.
Cleaning steps
1. Power down and open the printer
- Turn the power switch off and unplug the power cord.
- Squeeze the cover latches on both sides of the printer and lift the media cover fully open.
2. Remove the labels
- Lift out the label roll. Pull off any torn or adhesive-covered labels.
3. Clean the printhead
- Find the printhead on the underside of the top cover, above the platen roller.
- Wet a swab or cleaning pen with isopropyl alcohol.
- Wipe the dark strip (the heating elements) from the center outward, in one direction. Do not scrub back and forth.
- Use a fresh swab until it comes away clean.
- Let the printhead air dry for about 1 minute before closing anything.
4. Clean the platen roller
- Wet a clean swab or lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol.
- Wipe the rubber roller while rotating it by hand with the swab. Work along its full length.
- Keep going until the whole roller has been wiped and the swab stays clean.
5. Clean the media sensors and media path
- Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove paper dust and adhesive flakes from the media sensors and the media guides.
- Wipe the media path with a dry lint-free cloth. Use alcohol only on sticky residue.
6. Clean the tear-off or peel bar and the exterior
- Wipe the tear-off bar with an alcohol swab to remove adhesive buildup.
- Wipe the outside of the printer and the inside of the media compartment with a damp cloth and mild cleaner. Dry it afterward.
Reassemble and test
- Wait until the printhead and platen roller are fully dry.
- Reload the ribbon (if used) and the label roll, threading the media under the guides and through the sensor.
- Close the cover until both latches click.
- Plug in the printer and turn it on. Wait for the status light to turn solid green.
- Press the feed button once. One label should advance and stop at the gap.
- Print a configuration label: hold the feed button until the light blinks once, then release. Check that the label prints evenly with no streaks or faded areas.
- If labels skip or feed incorrectly, recalibrate the media sensor with the printer's calibration routine (hold the feed button until the light blinks twice, then release).
Troubleshooting after cleaning
If print quality is still poor after cleaning, match the symptom below.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Faded or light print | Dirty printhead or darkness set too low | Re-clean the printhead; raise the darkness setting |
| Vertical white streaks | Debris or damaged printhead elements | Re-clean; if streaks stay in the same spot, the printhead may need replacing |
| Labels skip or feed past the gap | Sensor dust or needs calibration | Brush out the sensors; run calibration |
| Blank labels | Wrong media type or ribbon loaded backward | Confirm direct thermal vs. thermal transfer media; recheck the ribbon |
| Light print on one side only | Uneven printhead pressure | Check that media is centered under the guides |
Cleaning schedule and when to escalate
| Part | How often |
|---|---|
| Printhead | Every roll of media (direct thermal) or every ribbon change (thermal transfer) |
| Platen roller | Every 2 to 3 media rolls, or when labels feed unevenly |
| Media sensors and path | Monthly, or when labels skip |
| Tear-off/peel bar | When adhesive builds up |
| Exterior | As needed |
